Take It Or Leave It Information

First opened in 1997, the Take It Or Leave It has been the flagship reuse centre for Edson and the surrounding area for nearly 25 years. The Take It Or Leave It has played an integral role in waste diversion in Edson over the years; in fact, each year this facility take in over 120 metric tonnes of waste that otherwise might have ended up in the landfill, in a recycling bin, or – unfortunately – as litter. The goal of the Take It Or Leave It is to divert used goods from the landfill and make them available to new homes, citizens, schools, community groups, or other non-profit groups.

If you are interested in supporting the Take It Or Leave It, this facility accepts small household items, such as small electronics, dinnerware, toys, books, picture frames, games, and decorations, and much more. Although our facility accepts many items, an item we do not accept is clothing. If you wish to donate clothing items, please visit the Thrift Store or Bargain Boutique. In the past, larger household items, such as furniture and building materials, could be dropped off at the Building Material Reuse Centre. Unfortunately, the Building Material Reuse Centre is closed for the season, due to significant fire damage.

Recently, the EDRS implemented a new policy at the Take It Or Leave It and items are no longer always free, some must be paid for. However, to ensure that items remain accessible for all, prices have been kept low, ranging from free, up to about $5 for a bag of items. Additionally, in certain circumstances, financial accommodations can be provided to ensure those in need are able to access the Take It Or Leave It. All proceeds from the Take It Or Leave It sales are used to help fund the Edson & District Recycling Society’s educational programs. These programs include our Community Garden & Recycle Depot tours, birdhouse building, school presentations, alternative energy displays, composting demonstrations and the many community events where we provide displays and activities with our Enviro Discovery trailer. These programs aim to educate our community on the value and need for recycling and sustainable actions, and hope to foster a sense of environmental stewardship among the members of our community.

Items can be dropped off from 9:00am until 4:30 pm Monday to Saturday at the main Recycling Depot building. Pick up hours are Wednesday from 10:00am-6:00pm and Saturdays from 10:00am-4:30pm. For more information regarding accepted items, purchasing, or volunteering, please contact the EDRS at 780-723-4002.
